Description

In many countries, poor nutrition contributes to billions of dollars in health costs. Early nutrition education is crucial, especially due to the rising issue of childhood and adolescent obesity, which strains healthcare and education systems. South Africa faces a growing obesity problem among its youth, with statistics indicating high prevalence rates. Childhood obesity leads to immediate psychological problems and long-term health risks, including cardiovascular diseases. Despite this, nutrition education in South African schools is limited. The Heads Foundation aims to combat childhood obesity in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, by implementing a year-long nutrition education program to promote healthy eating, physical activity, and a positive home food environment.
